Work History

  • 1967-1972: Studies in Geography, Sociology, History and Geology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Technical         University of Munich (final degree: Dipl. Geographer)
  • 1979: PhD in Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Spatial Planning of the University of Dortmund, topic of the dissertation: Spatial Planning in Malaysia
  • 1991: Post-doctoral degree („Habilitation”) in Department of social geography with focus on developing countries at the Faculty of Geography (Fachbereich 16), Dortmund University

 

Work Activities

  • 1973 – 1975: Regional and urban planner at the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning of Malaysia (as a DED- development aid worker)
  • 1976 – 1985: Academic staff and assistant professor of the Department of Sociological Foundations of Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund; involved in the foundation of the SPRING Programme
  • 1986 – 1988: DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) guest lecturer at the University of Science and Technology Kumasi, Ghana; assistance in the foundation of the second year of the SPRING Programme
  • 1988 - 1989: DFG (German Research Foundation) research project on the effects of Lake-Volta resettlement in Ghana
  • 1989 –1990: Academic staff at Dortmund University and freelance journalist activities
  • 1991 – 2005: Senior consultant for regional planning and socio-economics and temporarily Head of Department at the AHT-Group AG in Essen
  • Domestic projects: Regional report on the effects of a test route in Emsland, environmental impact statement on Schacht Konrad, city of Salzgitter
  • Advisor in development projects in Guatemala, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, South Africa, Gambia, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Russia, Estonia, Georgia, Armenia, Serbia and Romania
