Spatial Risk Management and Climate Impact Research
Climate change-proof urban development (2009- 2010)
Tackling causes and effects of climate change by urban concepts (Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), Research programme "Experimental Housing and Urban Development (ExWoSt)")
Climate change requires a threefold strategy in cities and city regions: the development of strategies for mitigating climate change, adaptation to climate change as well as a co-ordination of actions with other demanding challenges of sustainable urban development. The ExWoSt project aims at climate change-proof urban development primarily by developing integrated approaches for climate change mitigation and adaptation by spatial planning related prevention in cities and city regions.
A main result of the study will be the development and application of an integrated „Set of climate change strategies and actions for cities and communities”. Further, reports on adaptation strategies for specific fields of action for urban development will be produced. Finally, all recommendations will be integrated into a decision support tool for local decision makers.
