Race, Integration and Cohesion in the UK: Past, Present and Future

Prof. Dr. Harris Beider Academic Director, Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo), Futures Institute, Coventry , UK

This presentation will review national policy and practice in race, integration and cohesion in the UK in the post war period. Specifically it will suggest that these issues have been shaped by political rather than economic considerations which have influenced policy and practice. Further we will contend that Community Cohesion has become the key driver for race in the UK and marks a distinct departure from previous narratives. Finally the presentation will conclude by suggesting a new framework for debating race, integration and cohesion in the UK.
