Road Network in Detail

The following figures describe the road network database in detail. For illustrating different link attributes, a clipping is used which ranges from the North Sea / The Hague in the west to Dortmund in the east of the Ruhr Area in Germany and which shows the spatial road network database in detail.

The first figure below shows different road categories. Each link is assigned a motorway, dual carriageway road, other road or as a car ferry. Information on the road categories are taken from various national analoguous road maps.

The next figure gives the inclusion in the Trans European Transportation Networks Programme (TETN). Roads which are included in this programme are coloured. Previously existing roads are displayed in red, planned or future roads or roads under construction are displayed in yellow whereas all other roads which do not belong to the programme are displayed in black. The programme contains existing trunk roads as well as planned links or roads under construction for the EU member States. Both existing and planned links are taken from the "Joint Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council" and the "TEN implementation report". In the database the planned links are coded with their current characteristics with respect to link category and so reflect the situation in the mid-90s. 'Planned' means that in future some development will take place either in form of upgrading a road, e.g. from a national road to a motorway, or even in form of construction of a new road or motorway. If the alignment of the planned link is unknown, the development will take place in a corridor along the coded link.

Additionally to the TETN programme, the so-called TINA networks for the Candidate Countries as defined by the TINA-Secretariat are also included in the road network database. Moreover, also the so-called 'Helsinki Corridors' (formely known as 'Crete Corridors', according to a decision of the Council at the meeting in Crete in 1995) in the remaining east European countries are included.

For each classified road the national road identifiers are assigned in the database. Motorway identifiers start with an 'A'-character followed by the one, two or three digit national road number. Other national roads start with an 'N'-charcacter followed by the number. Besides the national road numbers, also the European road identifiers are available in the databank. Information on road identifiers are taken from various national analoguous road maps.
