16. November 2010 - “Sauerland-Excursion”

On November 16th the group of Iraqi students travelled to Arnsberg 50km south of Dortmund to learn more about Spatial Planning in Germany.
After a small introduction about Arnsberg and its characteristics the students were provided with an overview about problems and challenges the city of Arnsberg is facing and the strategies and concepts that have been developed to overcome these difficulties.
A tour through the quarter “Moosfelde” and discussions with various stakeholders from a local charitable society, community facilities and the municipality revealed future strategies to revitalize this housing area. An afternoon walk through the centre of Nehheim and a presentation by the regional economic promotion agency showed approaches how to make use of old and new structures for successful city development. At the same time this provided food for thought how planners can initiate and support innovative urban and regional, social and economic development processes.
This has been the first excursion in a series of planning excursions - there’ll be more to explore soon.
