15.-17. April 2011 - Trip to Hamburg

Between April 15th and 17th the group of Iraqi students travelled to Hamburg to learn more about Spatial Planning in Germany and especially the problems and potentials planners are facing in growing metropolitan regions.

Friday afternoon the group got a first impression of Hamburg’s history and historical urban structure while wandering through ‘Speicherstadt’ and got an insight in the recent developments called ‘Hafencity” where a completely new quarter is emerging. The importance of Master-Planning was discussed intensively as this is an urgent issue for the planning in Iraq at the moment.

In this context the group had another guided tour on Saturday, visiting some of the upcoming neighbourhoods learning more about the pros and cons of rapid urban development and its implications for the demographic, economic and social pattern and cultural life. This became not only evident in Eppendorf, Schanze and Altona but also in Wilhelmsburg, where the group explored the projects that have been started within the IBA to upgrade and develop this rather neglected part of the city.

Sunday the group travelled by boat to the fruit plantations, agricultural lands and traditional villages in ’Altes Land’ on the outskirts of the city. Enjoying the fine spring weather during a picnic and a guided tour amidst the blossoming apple trees the group learned a lot about rural-urban linkages and the importance of agricultural production in this rural area close to the metropolis.
This has been the forth excursion in a series of planning excursions – there’ll be more to explore soon.
