Dortmund: New leadership and new staff

Prof. Dr. Einhard  Schmidt-Kallert, who had acted as interim head of SPRING since Prof. Kreibich‘s retirement in July 2005, was officially confirmed in this position by the Faculty of Spatial Planning.

Prof. Schmidt-Kallert‘s confirmation and Dr. Anne Weber‘s succession as Managing Director (Dr. Bernd Jenssen retired in 2006) paved the way for a new phase for SPRING with new leadership in a new location. Yet it is by no means an abrupt break with the past. After all Prof. Schmidt-Kallert was one of the ‚founding fathers‘ of SPRNG when he worked at the Faculty of Spatial Planning in the 1980s and later as a long-term guest lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, SPRING‘s partner institution in Ghana. After a subsequent career as an international development consultant Prof. Schmidt-Kallert thus returned to his academic roots when he took up the post at SPRING.

There were further changes in the  SPRING team: Mrs. Anisa Nikkanen,  secretary and ‚trusted soul‘ for any student concerns went into retirement; Dr. Ingrid Jacobsen left SPRING to work in her hometown Berlin. Many thanks for their time at SPRING and all the best for their future! Dr. Wolfgang Scholz took a leave of absence to take up the position of DAAD guest lecturer at Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The two new lecturers joining the SPRING team are both graduates from the Faculty of Spatial Planning: Rhoda Lynn Gregorio (see first picture below) already worked briefly for SPRING in 2005 before working for the NGO Deutsche Welthungerhilfe in the Tsunami stricken province of Aceh, Indonesia. At SPRING Rhoda is now teaching project management and the SPRING workshops and is also coordinating the partnership with the University of the Philippines. Dr. Katrin Weiß (second picture below) previously worked for Prof. Kroes, who is now retired. Katrin teaches Finance and Budgeting as well as Regional Economic Development Planning. She is also in charge of the partnership with Ardhi University.
