The School of Spatial Planning pursues an interdisciplinary approach to planning integrating all spatial levels. This planning strategy has gained an exemplary national and international reputation. When the School of Spatial Planning was founded in 1969, it was the first institution of this type in Germany.
In terms of number of students and the wide range of subjects and disciplines, it is currently the biggest educational facility for spatial planners in Europe. Since 1975, more than 2.500 students have graduated from the School and found work in public, semipublic, and private institutions. Most are occupied in the fields of urban design, regulation, or control of spatial development. Many former students maintain contact to the School via the Alumni Association (‘Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Fakultät Raumplanung an der Universität Dortmund e.V.’).
