The hosting city, Dortmund, is one of the centres of economic life in the metropolitan Ruhr region, which is also one of the largest conurbations in Europe. The Ruhr region with a population of almost 5 million is characterized by a very strong polynuclear structure with several big cities (e.g. Bochum, Essen, Oberhausen and Duisburg) adjacent to each other along the two rivers Ruhr and Emscher.

Dortmund is usually associated with heavy industry, such as coal and steel, as well as with its traditional breweries. However, much less known is Dortmundīs past dating back to the 8th century. Located at the main trade routes of the middle ages, the "Hellweg" and the "Hansalinie", Dortmund had gained an important position in the Hanseatic League during the 13th century.

Together with universities in Bochum, Essen and Duisburg and neighbored by other large universities in Münster in the north as well as Cologne and Bonn in the south, the Ruhr area is nowadays provided with one of the highest educational densities in Germany.

The campus of the University of Dortmund is located not far away from the city centre, three stops from the main station by suburban train. Thus, participants of the ERSA congress may profit from downtown accommodation facilities in close distance.

The conference took place in the so called "Maths-Tower" of the University of Dortmund. The session rooms are close to each other. The hall on the first floor served as the general meeting place where the information booth is located. Coffee was served during the session breaks and lunch was provided in the main cafeteria of the university, a step away from the congress building.
