There were three social events during the conference. The first was a WELCOME RECEPTION given by the mayor of the City of Dortmund - Dr. Gerhard Langemeyer - at city hall. It took place on Tuesday August 27^th. (Photos)

The evening of Wednesday, August 28^th, gave opportunities to an open meeting: There was a "CAMPUS-BBQ" (Campus-Barbecue) as well as drinks in immediate proximity of the conference facility. (Photos) In addition, participants may have visited interesting institutes and firms in the neighbouring Dortmund Technology Centre - one of the most successful technology ventures in Germany. The CONGRESS DINNER took place in the machinery hall of the exhibition coal mine "Zollern II/IV". Built in the early 20th century, it used to claim state-of-the-art technology which is reflected in its technical infrastructure and industrial architecture ("Neo Baroque" of the late 19^th century). "Zollern" was shut down in 1966, saved from destruction in 1969 and today features exhibitions on the social and cultural history of the mining sector in the Ruhr area. A guided tour was offered to interested congress delegates. It featured a close look at the garden-city settlement, which surrounds Zollern which is typical for the old mining settlements in this region.
