Inhalt:
The objective of the lecture is the introduction into the core elements of the German Planning System. The students will get to know the system of spatial planning in the Federal State of Germany and the structure of the spatial observation as well as visions for spatial development for Germany and in Europe. The structure of the German planning legislation on local and regional level and requirements for the implementation of planning concepts and its instruments will be part of the lecture. The principles and objectives of urban and regional planning in Germany and in Northrhine-Westfalia will be discussed. Aspects of statutory and non-statutory procedures within comprehensive planning processes are added by examples of implementation.

From spatial planning towards urban design definitions of spatial planning, town planning, urban design and examples of processes of spatial planning on the different levels will be introduced and discussed. The history of the urban development of towns and a discussion on different visions about a sustainable future for the urban development will be opened. This includes the main tasks of regional and urban renewal in Germany as planning in the post-1990 period. Main developments and tasks in urban planning in Germany today are focussed on strategies for urban renewal, reconstruction and shrinking cities. There will be presented examples for urban development strategies and those for the renewal and revitalisation processes of historic towns as well as brownfield development strategies.
